Starting January 1, 2025, Lufthansa will implement an ‘Environmental Cost Surcharge’ on tickets for flights departing from all EU member countries, as well as Norway, Switzerland, and the UK. This surcharge, ranging from €1 to €72 based on the flight route, aims to offset the rising costs associated with EU environmental regulations.
🔋 **Why This Surcharge?**
The European Union's regulations require airlines to comply with:
- A two percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blending quota.
- Adjustments to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
- Participation in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
🌱 **Impacted Flights**
The surcharge applies to all Lufthansa Group carriers, including:
- Austrian Airlines
- Brussels Airlines
- Lufthansa City Airlines
- Discover Airlines
- Eurowings
- Air Dolomiti
- Swiss Air Lines
💡 **Lufthansa's Stance**
Lufthansa states, "The airline group will not be able to bear the successively increasing additional costs resulting from regulatory requirements in the coming years on its own. Part of these expected costs for 2025 are now to be covered by the new Environmental Cost Surcharge."
🌐 **Industry-Wide Impact**
With rising costs, more airlines may follow suit. British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Qantas, among others, aim to operate up to 10% of flights using SAF by 2030. This is a step towards ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050, dependent on increased SAF usage. However, SAF comes at a higher cost, reflected in Lufthansa’s ‘Economy Green’ fares, which offer sustainable flying at approximately €65 more than standard Economy Light fares.
💸 **What This Means for Passengers**
While the move towards a greener aviation industry is essential, it may also mean higher travel costs. As environmental costs rise, passengers should be prepared for potential increases in ticket prices in the future.
